The Assembly Defense Force (ADF) is an elite multispecies task force controlled directly by the Second Intergalactic Assembly and entrusted with immense responsibility, including the power of life and death over just about anybody in the galaxy. Though they generally have complete discretion as to how they accomplish their mission, an individual's status in the program can be revoked by the Assembly in a case of gross misconduct. However, until then, their identities are kept a secret—both by the Assembly and the agents themselves.

They are tasked with a wide range of assignments, including espionage, combat, diplomacy, and even reconstruction efforts.

Background[]

The Assembly Defense Force was founded with the Second Intergalactic Assembly itself after seeing how little power the Assembly actually held during the Ubiar Invasion and how successful the Human UNSM were in the very same conflict. The first Defenders were chosen from a collection of the Invasion's finest soldiers (primarily UNSM Marines), intended to function partly in an observational capacity, but also as the Assembly's first line of defense.

All ADF records are sealed and only granted access with both permission of the Chancellor and three other Senators. It is not even clear how many there are; HFC Navy Intelligence estimates that there are fewer than a hundred. Each Defender is hand-picked by the Council after proving that they are an individual of exceptional ability and self-reliance.

In theory, Defenders can be chosen from any race, but in practice they are usually selected from the Assembly races. Having a Spectre chosen from their kind often raises a particular species' profile on the galactic political landscape.

Organization[]

Defenders answer only to the Assembly, and in some cases the Assembly prefers not to know the exact details of their missions. Defenders act in any way they see fit, either with careful diplomacy or ruthless force, as they are effectively above the law. Some see the task force as a potential risk because they are not constrained by the law, while others are in awe of them, but most do not even know they exist altogether.

Candidates for the ADF typically have years of military or law enforcement experience before even being considered. The screening process involves background checks, psychological evaluations, and a long period of field training under an experienced mentor.
